Calabria makes up the toe of Italy’s boot, in the south of the country, with the Ionian Sea on one side and the Tyrrhenian Coast on the other. Here, you’ll uncover a fantastic landscape dotted with hillside villages and picturesque shores.

However, this sun-dappled region isn’t visited nearly as much as its well-known neighbours. In fact, there’s so much to be discovered by anyone venturing to Calabria. Now, let’s dive into some of the highlights of your next Italian escape...

Captivating Coastal Charm

In any warm and sunny destination, tourists are drawn to the countless fishing villages, seaside towns and coastal cities. Luckily, Calabria has plenty of these to choose from.

Take the town of Tropea, which towers above the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west coast. This small yet mighty location not only provides sandy beaches, but bustling streets filled with character. A beautiful historic church, perched on a hilltop, can be found nearby, too!

If you desire divine resorts by the sea, visit Capo Vaticano. This heavenly spot is sure to satisfy, boasting dramatic cliffs and rock formations, as well as white sand and clear waters. Find the perfect place for sunbathing, among sheltered coves and isolated bays.

There’s More Than Meets the Eye

Many travellers call at Calabria to slow down and unwind, but there are still oodles of fascinating sites to explore.

Reggio Calabria is the largest city here and a hive of activity. Roam castle halls, gaze upon ancient Greek sculptures or wander along the vast promenade - the choice is yours. Once you’ve finished your sightseeing adventure, why not hop on a ferry to Sicily?

Even the capital city isn’t far from scenic surroundings; just outside lies the mountainous Aspromonte National Park. You can certainly immerse yourself in nature by meandering through forest paths and past cascading waterfalls.

Tuck into Delectable Local Cuisine

It wouldn’t be a dreamy Italian destination if we didn’t shout about its delightful food. Enjoy cured meats like soppressata or ‘Nduja - a spreadable salami. Alternatively, taste Tropea onions, which are said to be some of the sweetest in the world! If you’re into food with a kick, ask for peperoncino on your pizza.

Thanks to its seaside location, seafood is a delicacy here, ranging from anchovies and tuna to swordfish. The closer you get to the coast, the fresher (and tastier) the dishes will be. After your meal, remember to sip on Vecchio Amaro del Capo, a beloved local liqueur.
