Traffic light system for travel

Update 3 July 2020 3.30pm: The Government has now published the list of 59 Countries you can travel to without having to quarantine on return to an airport in England - See bottom of blog. Update 3 July 2020 9am: The Government has announced that as of 10 July 2020, if you live in England, you can travel to France, Spain, Germany & Italy without the need to quarantine and the FCO advice on non-essential travel will be lifted for these countries on 4 July 2020. More countries are expected to be added to the list. It seems the Government is moving away from the idea of air bridges with a few select EU countries and according to the Daily Telegraph is about to release a list of 75 countries UK citizens can travel to without having to quarantine.

What is the traffic light system

Basically, the so-called traffic light system will classify countries as safe or otherwise, depending on the prevalence of coronavirus.

Green and amber countries will not require any quarantine in either country, Red Countries will.

The blanket FCO advice against travel is also expected to be redrafted accordingly.

Update 3 July 2020: It has been confirmed that as of 10 July 2020 if you arrive at an airport located in England you will not need to quarantine if arriving from Italy, Spain, France Germany. More countries will be announced imminently and the FCO advice will change from 4 July 2020.

Likely Green and Amber classified Countries

The list, to be published on Thursday or Friday, will lift the Foreign Office ban on non-essential travel to nearly all EU destinations, the British territories including Bermuda and Gibraltar, and Turkey, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

The rumored list is thought to include all EU countries as well as Bermuda, Gibraltar, Turkey, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand – the FCO advice against traveling to these countries will also be lifted.

However this is not to say that you can actually travel to all these countries, Australia and New Zealand for example are expected to retain strict border controls and quarantines.

Likely "Red" Countries

Any country with a higher "R" rate than the UK will be classified as Red and therefore quarantine will be a requirement and FCO advice not to travel to these countries will not be lifted. The USA and Portugal are two current examples.

Travel corridors: countries and territories exemption list

From 10 July 2020, unless they have visited or stopped in any other country or territory in the preceding 14 days, passengers arriving from the following countries and territories will not be required to self-isolate on arrival into England:

Ireland is already exempt as part of the common travel area, as are the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

In addition, the UK will be exempting the 14 British Overseas Territories.

This list may be added to over the coming days following further discussions between the UK and international partners.
