Southern Rhine City Experience
Highlights of the Rhine River Cruise
Just you, me and our river cruise on the Rhine.
From Frankfurt to Speyer, Strasbourg, Basel, Breisach and Mainz to Frankfurt.
According to the atlas, there is exactly one Rhine. But there are actually hundreds, because it shows a different side of itself everywhere. Sometimes grim, sometimes lovely. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes mighty. Sometimes enchanted, then clear again. No journey is as varied as a trip on the Rhine. Town houses, cathedrals, castles, palaces? Half-timbered, granite or sandstone? There's nothing here that doesn't exist. The Rhine goes wonderfully well with baroque and gothic architecture and looks great in photos - but its home is actually between wild cliffs and dense forests, between knights' castles and winegrowing villages, whose vineyards it has made fertile in the course of its history.
Strasbourg - The Roman commander Drusus founded Strasbourg as a military outpost in 12 BCE. Today it is a thriving metropolis that has maintained many small half-timbered houses and an historic old town. Even the briefest glance at Strasbourg Cathedral will tell you that you are standing before one of the most important of its kind in Europe – and one of the largest sandstone buildings in the world.
Frankfurt - "Here I am human, here I am entitled to be." This quote from Frankfurt's most famous son - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - actually comes from his "Faust", but it also applies wonderfully to his home city. You will find modern financial buildings stretching high into the sky as well as an old town with historic buildings and half-timbered houses. And if you simply want to unwind on this river cruise, take a long walk along the beautiful banks of the Main.
Basel - Located directly on the border triangle of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel became an important European trade and transportation hub early on due to its special location. A well-known attraction is the oldest zoo in Switzerland. It is one of the most significant zoos in Europe. Basel also has eight churches with historic organs, which still fill the naves with their fine sounds today.
Mainz - The Rhine meets the city of Mainz right in between Lake Constance and the North Sea. The carnival city is known for its cheerfulness and hospitality. You'll feel right at home here after just a few seconds. How about a stroll along the picturesque banks of the Rhine? Or you could visit Mainz Cathedral. It is home to one of the richest church furnishings in Christendom. The most important pieces include the funerary monuments of several archbishops and the altars. Another important building is the Electoral Palace. In terms of architecture, it belongs to the "German Renaissance".
