One of the best parts about going on holiday is getting away from it all. We can take a break from the hustle and bustle of our day-to-day lives and surround ourselves with dreamy natural landscapes.

A place with no shortage of such settings is Sardinia; this spectacular Italian island is brimming with beauty. In fact, it has a grand total of 17 national parks and nature reserves, all of which make a superb spot for a leisurely walk or two.

So, which of these parks should you seek out during your Sardinian adventure? We’ve picked out a few of our top choices to help you decide.

Gola Su Gorropu Gorge

Undoubtedly, one of the most gorgeous national parks in Sardinia (if not the whole of Italy) is Gola Su Gorropu Gorge. This incredible natural phenomenon is one of the deepest gorges in Europe, and it really is an extraordinary sight to behold. Its limestone cliffs are around 1,500ft high and its narrowest point is just four metres wide, making it a truly unique attraction to venture to.

Plus, if you call here when it’s quiet, you could be in for a real treat. As well as its intriguing geographical features, the gorge is also home to endangered flora and fauna and rare wildlife. If you’re lucky, you could come across glorious golden eagles and 1000-year-old yew trees, both of which make for breathtaking viewing.

Giara di Gesturi

Giara di Gesturi (or “Jara'' as it’s known locally) is perhaps the most famous nature reserve in all of Sardinia. Situated in the south of the island, it’s a 42-square-kilometre plateau that was formed by a volcanic eruption over two million years ago.

The entire area is a haven of colour and greenery, where wild horses peacefully roam free and hundreds of plant species thrive. You can experience it all on one of the many wonderful walking trails, passing scenic sights like lakes, pools and old oak trees. The surplus of natural splendour found here has truly made it a must-visit destination for travellers who love exploring these kinds of environments.

Parco Nazionale dell’Asinara

If you’d like a change of scenery, head over to the island of Asinara, which sits just off Sardinia’s northwestern tip. This ancient site was actually used as a prison for over 100 years, but now, it’s a national park that’s adored by visitors for its untouched appearance.

Travelling to this place really is the epitome of escaping the hubbub of normal life. It’s so remote that it can only be reached by boat and is almost completely uninhabited (the 2001 census listed just one person living here).

You’re highly likely to encounter some wildlife during your time here, though. Asinara is actually Italian for “donkey-inhabited”, so it should come as no surprise that it’s known for its population of wild albino donkeys. These calm creatures just add to the island’s cheerful charm.

Visiting these revered reserves couldn’t be easier. Simply browse through our array of affordable packages, and book a blissful holiday to Sardinia. Don’t hesitate; secure your next getaway, today.
