A holiday to Venice is simply sensational: sun-soaked skies, glittering canals and cultural highlights are found around every corner here.

You’ve likely heard a lot about this sublime city. However, there’s still so much to uncover, including the special adventures you can partake in when you travel there. That’s why we’ve rounded up the truly incredible activities, experiences and sightseeing wonders you can encounter on a getaway to this astonishing part of the world.

Read on to discover the unique things you can do in the “city of love”.

Wander Over to Rialto Market

We urge every holidaymaker to seek out the remarkable Rialto Market. It’s located near the momentous Rialto Bridge, and has teased a whole range of appetites for seven centuries!

This marvellous market supplies delectable local produce, which will help you build the perfect Italian picnic. Gaze at the colourful crates of fruit and vegetables, or ogle at the collection of fresh seafood, sold by a variety of vendors. Some sellers may even offer you a few sumptuous samples to taste!

Head to a Papier-Mâché Mask Shop

This amazing location is brimming with Venetian papier-mâché mask shops, and we’d recommend calling in at one during your travels. Ca’ Macana is a particular favourite, offering two separate stores which are filled with these stunning creations. The first shop originally opened back in 1986, so it feels entirely authentic when you step inside.

Visitors can try on, touch and photograph the unusual carnival masks before making a purchase. Even if you don’t intend on buying, just seeing the rare, handmade masterpieces hung on the wall is a sight to behold; there’s nothing quite like it.

Admire St. Mark's Basilica at Night

St. Mark's Basilica may be a delightful sight to see in the day time, but on a night it’s really quite spectacular. This church’s beautiful infrastructure and fascinating history (which dates back to the 11th century!) has made it one of the city’s most prominent monuments.

Venture here at dusk to escape the busy crowds and observe the building lit up in all its glory. The ambience makes it an ideal place for a romantic stroll, where you can fully immerse yourself in the magnificence of your surroundings.

Steer a Gondola

When we think of Venice, we picture its glorious gondola-lined canals. Of course, you can book a tour to sail down the sparkling, blue waters and watch the world go by. Although, for something a little different, you could learn to steer this Venetian rowing boat for yourself.

There are plenty of classes available throughout the city, usually taking an hour or longer, depending on your teaching preference. This is a great activity to enjoy during your getaway and one you’ll remember for years to come.
