You wouldn’t think of the gorgeous Sicilian landscape without picturing extraordinary Mount Etna. Not only does it offer a dramatic backdrop to any getaway in the area, but it’s also created a unique countryside to explore.

What you might not know, though, is that this stratovolcano is one of the world’s most active. In fact, it’s nearly constantly active! Don’t worry, you can visit this incredible landmark with no concerns.

If you’re booking a holiday to Sicily and want to plan an escape here, read the rest of our guide, to become well-informed before your adventure abroad.

How Can I Get There?

One of the best ways to traverse Mount Etna is by arranging a pre-booked expedition. Opting for a group tour means that you’ll be in safe hands, as your guide will inform you if it’s unsafe to go beyond a certain point.

A key reason why a tour is so appealing? It ensures you reach the summit, and you cannot venture there without a trained guide to accompany you. Luckily, there are plenty of these available; they will pick you up and transport you to the mountain, too.

If you’re not planning on visiting with an organised group, you can still hike a significant amount of the way up. Simply drive to the site and make use of the car parking facilities. Then, set off on your journey by following the well-marked paths. When your feet begin to ache, you could even hop on a cable car!

What Will I See There?

Black sand, volcanic rock and lava fields are just the start of the stunning natural scenery here, all encompassed in the national park.

Stop by the Valle del Bove, which was created when Etna collapsed in on itself to form a huge canyon. You’ll also find glaciers and caves along the way.

During the winter months (and into the spring), much of the ground will be covered in snow; it’s a truly beautiful experience. The summit consists of four amazing craters, so it’s certainly worth booking that tour.

On top of the astonishing surroundings, you’ll be met with a spectacular view of the area below. For instance, you should be able to spot the Ionian Sea beneath your feet (if you’re on the correct side).

What Do I Need to Bring?

It’s crucial that you slip into appropriate clothing and footwear beforehand. Hiking shoes are ideal because the ground can be a little rough and gravelly. The increased altitude of the volcano means that temperatures will drop as you inch closer to the top, even during the height of summer.

Make sure you pack enough water to stay hydrated, alongside some food to snack on. Last but not least, don’t forget your camera. We know that this is an experience you’ll want to remember for years to come!
