Holiday Ideas for October 2021
This October will see a lot of loosening up of travel restrictions; on October 4 the so-called traffic light system will be put on the shelf to be replaced with just a list of "do not go" (red) countries, this list itself is rumoured to be being reduced to 9 countries from the current 54.
For double vaccinated UK people the need to quarantine on return is abolished and later this month it is expected that the mandatory test before returning to the UK will be swapped from the expensive PCR test to the much much cheaper lateral flow test. We will update the information on these changes in a separate blog post once they are announced.
So in anticipation - where do we recommend?!
Rhodes is an obvious choice with average temperatures of 24C in October and 300 days of sunshine in a year and miles of sandy beaches. If you want a break from the beach, Rhodes has ancient ruins and a medieval harbour in its capital for you to visit. For the more active, October is a cooler time for nature walks such as in the Valley of the Butterflies.
Sicily averages a high of 22C during October and the sea is still warm enough to swim in comfortably and it's a sweet lover paradise with Gelato, cannoli, and granita to savour. It's a great island for both relaxing and sightseeing some breathtaking baroque towns and maybe a Montalbano tour?
Slovenia is our choice for an autumnal short break as the cooling in weather results in bursts of autumnal colours on the hillsides around Lake Bled, stay and explore in Ljubljana but make sure to take a cruise to the fairy tale Island in the middle of Lake Bled. For the adventurous, there is an Indian-Jones style walkway at sheer-sided Bled Gorge.
