One of the world’s most celebrated destinations, Italy is a country awash with incredible sights and experiences, plus a well-renowned food scene. With a whole host of vibrant cities to choose from, all offering history, art and unique excursions, it can be hard to narrow down where to visit. Italy’s capital is a city made for walking, and offers visitors a dazzling array of sights and experiences. At every turn you’ll discover ancient monuments, pretty piazzas with baroque fountains, art-filled galleries and iconic sights. Must-sees include The Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Sistine Chapel and the Trevi Fountain – however, there are hundreds more fascinating sights to fill your days with. Rome’s dining scene is equally as impressive, with plenty of al fresco restaurants and everything from high-end establishments to bustling pizzerias. Most tourists take a short city break to Rome, but longer holidays are becoming popular and many visitors find themselves returning again and again.
Famous for its Shakespeare connections, Verona is a beautiful mix of pretty piazzas, maze-like lanes, beautiful bridges and impressive artwork. In the city’s busy centre stands an incredibly well-preserved 1st century amphitheatre that’s a must-see for visitors on a Verona city break. There are also a whole host of grand churches to visit, and it’s easy to see why Verona is often considered one of northern Italy’s most beautiful cities. Best of all, the city is also just a short train ride from the stunning shores of Lake Garda.
One of Italy’s most iconic cities, Venice has long lured tourists from far and wide with its cobbled alleyways and magnificent architecture. Uniquely built on water, Venice boasts marble palaces, awe-inspiring churches and art-filled galleries. Venice holidays should include a healthy itinerary, and must-sees include St Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace, Saint Mark’s Basilica and the ornate Rialto Bridge. Many visitors also enjoy a leisurely gondola ride through the canals, which offers fantastically different views of the architecture.
Compact in size but bursting with sights, Florence is a destination for enjoying world-class art, breathtaking architecture and mouth-watering Tuscan cuisine. Located on the Arno River in North-East Tuscany, trips to Florence take lucky visitors back in time with its small, cobbled streets, elegant 15th century palaces, candle-lit churches and white-washed basilicas. The entire centre of the city has earnt UNESCO World Heritage protection and after a day of exploring the sites you’ll find plenty of incredible restaurants for re-fuelling.
Often dubbed the fashion capital of the world, Milan is one of Italy’s more modern cities and is oozing with style. In the city centre you’ll find glistening skyscrapers which contrast the quaint historical quarter that is lined with beautiful palaces. Shopaholics will love the snazzy boutiques and the glamorous Via Montenapoleone is the destination for luxury haute couture. History buffs will also find plenty to keep them entertained with a whole host of art galleries, museums and churches to explore. In fact, Milan is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, and it’s fantastic location means that many visitors now choose to embark on a Milan and Lake Como twin centre holiday.
