A historically rich island, chockful of artefacts and ruins redolent of Ancient Greece, Crete has it all – from pearly-white beaches where you can lay about like a starfish from dawn ‘til dusk, to centuries-old settlements, caves and ruins which feature in history books. Crete is Greece’s largest island, home to a range of diverse terrains running through its core and surrounded by the twinkling Mediterranean. It’s the perfect place for a seven-night getaway if relaxing and unwinding is one of your top priorities.
Here, olive groves, vineyards and fruit orchards trickle down mountainsides while idyllic beaches pepper the coastline and tall mountains sprout from the sea like jagged daisies. When it comes to plant life, thick forests collide with arid, cacti-filled areas to create a real hodgepodge of scenery.
If you’re an avid history buff, seek out ancient Minoan ruins sprinkled across the island and offering visitors a window into the past, such as the Palace of Knossos and the ruins of Gournia to name a couple. Other timeworn artefacts can be found in the remotest of villages. Stray off the beaten touristy track in search of “folklore" or “traditional house" museums and you’ll feel yourself transported back to the 19th century.
Crete’s landscapes are also characterised by olive trees and most villages are home to an olive pressing factory. Olive oil is the island’s “liquid gold” – used for cooking a wide range of traditional dishes which you’ll no doubt sample while you’re there.
