Romantic Rhine Adventure: Castles, Legends & Wine
Highlights of the River Cruise on the Rhine
What dreams are made of: Wild landscapes and lonely castles.
From Cologne to Rüdesheim, Germersheim (Speyer), Strasbourg (Kehl), Mainz, Loreley Valley and Koblenz to Cologne.
Even UNESCO fell in love with the Middle Rhine Valley. This World Heritage Site invites your romantic fantasies to run wild. What kind of adventures did the heroic residents of the mighty castles have? What did they fight for? For faith, countries, power or love? And how much truth is there in the legend about Lorelei and all the sailors who sank in the river’s wild currents (currents that have since been tamed) because of her? A wonderful backdrop to which everyone – not just romantics, but anyone with a vivid imagination and an interest in history – can raise a glass of excellent regional wine. And as you do so, you can recall the wonderful experiences of the past few days and look forward to the coming ones, when you’ll encounter stunning scenes of natural beauty along with some of the most magnificent cities along the Rhine.
Cologne : We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The cathedral watches over the city. With its 157.38 meters, it is the third highest church building in the world. Climbing the tower may be challenging, but we still recommend it on this river cruise. You will be rewarded with an unforgettable view over the city and the Rhine. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.
Loreley : The Rhine really starts to make a scene in the Middle Rhine Valley – and it’s little wonder, seeing as in Koblenz, the Moselle pumps in an extra 315 m3 of water per second. And then the rocks close ranks, and the riverbed narrows by almost two-thirds. Up above, the legendary Lorelei has been impassively watching this natural drama since time immemorial
Upper Middle Rhine Valley : Winemaking villages respectfully huddle by the bank of the river, and castles look on from a safe height. UNESCO had good reason to designate the 526th–593rd kilometre section of the Rhine a World Heritage Site. Which of the old castles is most imposing? The Marksburg, perhaps? This 13th-century fortress, including its frescoes and knights’ hall as well as the steps carved into the rocks, is still largely intact.
